Nymph of a cotton stainer?
My guess is that this could be a nymph of a cotton stainer, family Pyrrhocoridae.

Now I guess I'll have a try at moving an image to the Guide. From info on the Web it appears that this deserves to be called the Cotton Stainer Bug, Dysdercus saturellus. It seems to have enough other botanical host plants to explain its being in a botanical garden rather than in a cotton field.
