I have searched the site, Google images and webpages and the closest thing I can come up with is assassin bug eggs.

I bet you are right. They certainly look like tabanid eggs, but I've never seen a mass covered with a chalky material before.

Do you have an idea of the size of this egg mass?
I found a similar one in southern France: eggs in one layer, deposited vertically on a leaf, covered with a kind of chalky material...
Diptera larvae emerged from the eggs I reared, and then Scelionids emerged.

So maybe yours could be a Tabanid egg mass?
