Blood-sucking Conenose - Triatoma lecticularia

Blood-sucking Conenose - Triatoma lecticularia
Indian Cave State Park, Shubert, Nemaha County, Nebraska, USA
June 15, 2017
Size: approx. 18mm
Not previously reported for Nebraska.

This looks exactly like the CDC image of sanguisuga
plus it looks like you could almost throw a rock and hit either Kansas or Missouri, so not surprising that it might be here. Not challenging Swanson, of course, but want folks matching pictures to know that this is an unusual pattern for lecticularia

Triatoma sanguisuga
John and Jane,

We agree that this specimen looks more like T. sanguisuga than T. lecticularia. We checked the images on BG and the CDC website.

must be this one... will seek confirmation

Bloodsucking Conenose
V,

Thanks for the ID. Hope it can be confirmed.

Dan Swanson says:
"To my knowledge, neither sanguisuga nor lecticularia have been recorded from Nebraska and this is a new genus record for the state. [...] 4 red triangles plus appropriately hairy = lecticularia to me - I just find the photo inconclusive, without more pronotal markings."

still, the shape of the head here, more robust/less pointy than i see in the commonest sanguisuga, makes me lean towards lecticularia (both spp. show up at my porch lights, at about 15:1 ratio), but specimens have to be examined to make it official-- please collect.
good find in any case; things keep moving north, no doubt about that.

must see proboscis to tell sp.; may well not be that species
