neat
i see these around my lights lately, but always one at a time -- unlike several other members of this subfamily that are pretty common

yes, a first for me
Not one I have seen before. Now I know how to recognize it, perhaps I will find it more often. I thought it was a ground beetle at first glance due to its glossiness, so maybe I have seen it before and not investigated further. (Though I like ground beetles, I have not the patience to work through the ID for most of them.)

but most ground beetles over ~5 mm are pretty easy from dorsal photos -- especially hi-quality pics like yours... just take a snapshot with forebody in focus, post it here, and get it narrowed down real fast
the same would work with the smaller ones, too -- most of the time; except perhaps for some stenolophines that will have to wait

thanks
Thanks for your kind words. I will continue to post ground beetles when I get the chance. (I have been doing photography for 50 years and I have finally gotten competent at it!)
