Agromyzidae from leaf-cup, Polymnia - Melanagromyza

Agromyzidae from leaf-cup, Polymnia - Melanagromyza
Malanaphy Springs, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
June 13, 2017
02/18/17 Collected winter stem of leaf-cup, Polymnia, bearing a swelling with a large fly puparium inside, per

06/13/17 Agromyzid emerges. But wait, that's too small to have come from the large puparium in the stem swelling. Investigation reveals a smaller puparium, lid popped off, inside a non-swollen section of stem adjacent to the swollen area. Furthermore, a close look reveals the large puparium is inviable (drat).

Owen Lonsdale reports:
"Melanagromyza virens group (female); most similar to M. vernoniae (known from DC), but no way to tell for sure without a male; first non-Neotropical record of Polymnia as host."

I'm not sure if you posted the Urtica dioica ones on BugGuide, but he identified those as Melanagromyza martini--known from that host but new distribution record (previously BC, AB, SK, ON, CA).

Excellent
Thank you, Charley!

Urtica agromyzids:

It was fun to discover a month or so ago when the Phytomyza emerged (indoors) that its puparium is different enough from the Melanagromyza puparia in nettle stems that you can tell them apart pretty easily, even just with a hand lens.
