Hackberry Butterfly - Asterocampa celtis - male

Hackberry Butterfly - Asterocampa celtis - Male
South Carolina, USA
Size: ~1 inch
very friendly butterflies..often land on you while you are trying to photograph them..plant a hackberry tree, and they will come..these brave butterflies attempt to chase birds from their tree..the Hackberry Tree is a messy tree in that it drips a liquid from the leaves on hot days that insects come for and the birds come for the insects..the liquid that drips, stains any growth under the tree black..
