Cuckoo Leafcutter Bee - Coelioxys porterae - female

Cuckoo Leafcutter Bee - Coelioxys porterae - Female
Pleasantville, Westchester County, New York, USA
June 24, 2017
Size: 11 mm
We’ve never seen a cuckoo leafcutter of this kind around here, and aren’t sure what it is. We were wondering whether it could be C. porterae?

The 11 mm bee has all black legs, and an abdomen with a long sixth segment, which narrows at the end with small, tooth-like notches on either side of the bottom rim, just before the tip.

This bee was feeding on coreopsis; we noticed that the Discover Life database records this as a flower food for C. porterae, which also has a notched S-6. The fairly long hairs on the bee’s eyes are shown here, because the Discover Life Database notes this character distinguishes the bee from C. octodentata?
