Manduca quinquemaculata - Manduca quinquemaculatus

Manduca quinquemaculata - Manduca quinquemaculatus
shawnee, johnson County, Kansas, USA
August 23, 2007
Size: approx. 80 mm long
this large fella just about hit me as he flew by and landed on the window. biggest insect I've ever seen. definitely over 3 inches from head to tail. my first guess was that it was some sort of moth. the poor picture I took does not do justice to the rather ominous markings on the back and wings of this creature. I immediately started looking for information on it. any help in identifation would be greatly appreciated.
thank you for your time.
