Anuroctonus pococki
Riparian and forest areas tend to have dark individuals which can easily be mistaken for U. mordax. The tail looks long because the scorpion is severely malnourished, the mesosoma has shrunk.

Moved from Scorpions.

I've never lived in an area where these live.
Are they docile enough to pick up??

Yes and No
I would advise caution in "picking up" any scorpion unless you're ready for a potential sting. However, if you want to hold a scorpion, let it crawl from the ground onto your flattened hand, gently guiding it with a stick or something. At that point your hand is simply another "ground surface" to them and they aren't in the habit of stinging the ground they walk on. At least that's my experience, and it works on these fiesty little Vaejovis carolinianus over here. The one photo'd is probably a Uroctonus mordax, which I believe is relatively docile ... when properly treated.

Interesting to know.
Thanks for the info, should I ever come across one and feel the need to hold it...

I agree, but this one has such large claws that I doubt it's a dangerous scorpion.

Really?
What's the claw-size relationship? I know nothing about scorpions...

big hands, weak venom
Usually, if it has large robust chelae (hands) AND a relatively slender or short, stocky tail, it is harmless (still hurts, though). If it has slender hands and slender tail, packs some punch. If it has slender, thin hands and a fat tail, watch out!

That about says it. =)

Good to know -
Thank you! =)
