We would have said Cerambycid
but the antennae are so short! Maybe something near Neoclytus? or Xylotrechus?

to be fairly close to the image on bugguide and a match to the plate in my California Beetle field guide

Perhaps we are talking about the same beetle
In the Field guide to California Beetles, It list the Nautical Borer (X. nauticus) also known as the Oak Cordwood Borer. I don't find any reference to an Oak Timberworm Borer(Arrhenodes minutus).
