I would like to know what this is. I have lived here all my life and have never seen one of these before.

One just found in Chalmette,
One just found in Chalmette, LA, outside around 11:30 a.m., very active on sidewalk and brick exterior. Female, 2.7 cm (eyeball measurement).

OMG! I live in southeast kans
OMG! I live in southeast kansas and I have found three of these wasp in my backyard just this week. I am highly allergic to bees so I hate to think what will happen if i got stung by this lady. Does anyone know how to get rid of them?

This is a red velvet ant. t
This is a red velvet ant. t it is actually a wasp. The males have wings. The females lay eggs in bumble bee and wasp nests. The eggs hatch and eat the larva. Watch out - this lady packs a painful sting.

You should also know that a velvet ant is a wasp that has quite a sting. This is a female; male has wings.

Dasymutilla occidentalis occidentalis
This is Dasymutilla occidentalis, one of the most common and easily identified velvet ants. The male has very similar coloration and is roughly the same size as the females.
