Unidentified Beatle - Cotinis mutabilis
Alviso, Santa Clara County, California, USA
August 25, 2007
Size: 4 cm
Observed adjacent to salt marsh at the southern end of San Francisco Bay in mid-afternoon. Green shell was more irridescent in the field than it appears in the photo.

june beatle
i agree it looks more like a june beatle!

unknown beatle
Which kind of beatle is it?

June beetle...
Looks like it could be a june beetle.

Close, but not in California
It's a Green Fruit Beetle(Cotinus mutabilis). Nice shot of the head, which I've never seen clearly before.

Cotinis mutabilis
Interesting how the mark on the elytra varies. If I knew how, I'd put a pic of one from AZ here. Since I don't, I'll just post it to the species page and you can also see it if you click on my name here.

Adding thumbnails
If the photo is already posted, it's easy. Use this format: [thumb:xxxxx] replacing the xxxxx with the photo number of your post.

For more info like this, check the Help tab.

Do you know if C. mutabilis is found in Texas? The Info pages for this and a similar species have got me confused.

Head
Does it have moptop?

Nope
Fair hair, for a beetle anyway.
