Robber fly - Efferia aestuans - female

Robber fly - Efferia aestuans - Female
Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
July 4, 2017
Size: about 20 mm
Robberfly sitting on Trumpet Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) waiting to ambush. The asymmetrical hexagonal faceting on eyes really nice. Not sure if faceting is an internal (light effect showing interior eye structure) or external feature. Always fascinated by the architecture of insects revealed through magnification. Photo taken in garden 7/4/17 (8:55 AM EDT)

Moved from ID Request.

Pointed abdomen = ♀
The light is reflecting off of the outside of the eyes, mostly.
