Grasshopper - Melanoplus femurrubrum - male

Grasshopper - Melanoplus femurrubrum - Male
Bailey Island, Cumberland County, Maine, USA
August 24, 2007
Size: 24mm body
My guess would be Northern Spurthroat (Melanoplus borealis) but I would like input from someone who isn't just guessing.

Moved
Moved from Melanoplus.

Melanoplus femurrubrum
The shape of the subgenital plate, and the coloration make this a Red-legged Grasshopper.

Looks more like Melanoplus bi
Looks more like Melanoplus bivittata - Two-striped, slightly dark exposure. But I could be wrong. Whoops - changed my mind - I think you've got it.

Grasshopper
Thanks for your help.

Melanoplu sp., male.
This image is so good it actually leaves room (albeit slim) for hope of a species ID. It is obviously a male (bulbous abdomen), so that helps a great deal as well.

Melanoplus
Thanks, Eric. Now I'll have to see if I can catch some. They don't often stand still for photos such as this one. I'll see if I can find more detailed images to post.
