Xanthippus montanus - Sandhills Band-wing Grasshopper - Xanthippus montanus - Male Female
Black Squirrel Creek, Chico Basin Ranch, El Paso County, Colorado, USA
June 22, 2017
Fairly common in this location with lots of pebbly sand. Sometimes found with Xanthippus corallipes but that species occurs in more grassland habitat about 200 yards to the west and this species is found where the sand habitat is prevalent, here in a dry wash below tall vegetated dunes. This is a smaller species with lighter, less pronounced forewing spotting. Differences noticeable when both species are seen together.
