Size: about 12 mm
I assumed this was a species I had already photographed & was mostly trying to get a shot of him in the air, so I took only one shot of him when he landed (big mistake); haven't photographed this species before. I'm guessing Eupeodes based on photos on BugGuide.

An excellent guess, but so is Syrphus.
That's why, most often, IDs of these don't go to genus. Tribe Syrphini is the usual ID.
