Marsh Conehead - Neoconocephalus palustris - female

Marsh Conehead - Neoconocephalus palustris - Female
Hwy 55 and Sedwick, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
July 18, 2004
Going through old images and updating as needed with better-processed versions, I noticed this image of Neoconocephalus palustris (female), of which we have very few images. This detail shows the shape of the cone:
Quoting from Singing Insects of North America:

Identification: A small-to-medium, secretive conehead with a slightly pinched cone that is immaculate beneath. Lower margins of hind femur darker near bases of spines. Ovipositor shorter than hind femur. Length 37-46 mm for males, 40-62 for females.
Similar species: N. velox is longer; occurs earlier in the year; and its cone, in profile view, is straight beneath; lower margins of hind femur not darker near bases of spines. N. robustus and N. bivocatus are larger and have ovipositors that are as long as or longer than the hind femur.
