4.5 mm aquatic(?) insect, no wings, Kootenays, Fernie, BC, May 2012
Fernie, British Columbia, Canada
May 20, 2012
Size: 4.5 mm
Main picture is dorsal view. Second is lateral. Third is ventral.

4.5 mm long, no visible wings or wing buds, abdomen has maybe 8 or 9 segments, mouthparts appear to be modified for sucking, 3 pairs of segmented legs. I have several specimens from separate aquatic samples, so I'm assuming it's aquatic. No obvious gills, though it does have 2 short dorsal tubes near the end/sides of its abdomen. Eyes have a compound appearance, though again, not totally sure.

This looks like ...
... an aphid mummmy (an aphid that has been parasitized by an Aphidiinae [Braconidae]), although 4.5mm is a pretty big aphid.
