Flesh Fly - Sarcophaga - female

Flesh Fly - Sarcophaga - Female
Lacey (near Olympia), Thurston County, Washington, USA
August 27, 2007
Size: large fly (horsefly size)
This very large fly was kind enough to pose for me for a while. I tried looking him up under tachinids as he is very bristly. Tried looking him up under flesh flies as he has the lengthwise racing stripes a lot of those guys seem to have. I think it's time for me to get a lesson on how to *really* tell my fly families apart. Mouth parts maybe?

In hopes that you get your lesson
I've subscribed to this fun post. Wing veins will likely be at least part of the answer.
