Nice find
This is a
Scelopristis
, probably the male of
S. vandykei
(Blaisdell). Most members of the genus are partial to various species of
Stephanomeria
, which are among the very few flowers blooming in this part of the world during the extra-crispy late summer / early fall season. This species, along with a the other
Scelopristis
and a few currently in
Trichochrous
, will probably be consolidated into
Asydates
as a result of some work that Adriean Mayor and I are doing. Some, like this species and
S. grandiceps
, have males with enlarged heads. Very interesting group--stay tuned.
This will be the same species as the dasytine in the photo from the same time/place.
