Beetle at the beach (Buprestid?) - Melanophila consputa
Bolsa Chica State Beach, Orange County, California, USA

While sitting at the beach, I spied this beetle in the sand next to me. It allowed me to pick it up and then proceeded to crawl on the top of my hand. It stopped briefly when it got to the tip of my thumb, appearing to be sampling something under the fingernail. Detritivore?
