Villa ??? - Villa lateralis

Villa ??? - Villa lateralis
Aromas, San Benito County, California, USA
August 27, 2007
Size: ~ 1 cm
This guy appeared briefly in our garden in live oak/chaparral habitat. I'm guessing Villini and maybe Villa.

Villa looks good.
I think yours is Villa lateralis. Hey, it's all in the lumping...

How about Villa arenicola?
How about Villa arenicola?

Looks good, but I believe that's a strictly eastern species.
Species ID is tough on these, plus genus hasn't been reviewed since 1892.

A caution has now been added
A caution has now been added to the Canadian Journal of Arthropod Identification key, which I used, that some characters used in the key may not be reliable and id based on them should be regarded as tentative. Hence....Villa sp.

Thanks Ron
I've always been more of a lumper than a splitter. I'm amazed at how many species of Syrphids I am finding in our small garden, 8 species now in barely a month of looking. Thank you for all your help with the various species I have posted.

You're entirely welcome.
You keep posting. I'll keep looking. Love those flies, syrphids in particular.
