Lion Beetle - Ulochaetes leoninus

Lion Beetle - Ulochaetes leoninus
11.4 miles north of Ola, Gem County, Idaho, USA
July 18, 2017
Size: large
Low quality image for Idaho. The bumble bee mimicry worked on me (even though it looked somewhat more like a beetle)! Its intimidating appearance and the very loud buzzing of its wings persuaded me not to touch it (in an effort to slow it down). I saw and heard it flying toward me at sunset, watched it land on the ground, looked to see what the heck it was, ran for the camera, and was able to relocate it attempting to become airborne again. Due to a very active insect and the low light, I was only able to acquire blurred images, although I felt lucky to have something that would allow identification!
