Purple Sawfly Larvae
No, my wife and I know virtually nothing about bugs or where to look for information. Somebody suggested I submit it to BugGuide. Our image clearly conforms to your link. Thank you very much.

 
Raising larvae
Here's a link to raising butterfly/moth larvae (http://lancaster.unl.edu/pest/resources/ButterflyMothRearing290.shtml), but the principles are about the same. Hopefully you still have some larvae to raise. You might contact Mike Quinn http://bugguide.net/user/view/4620, he might be interested in seeing the adults. For my selfish curiosity, I'd love to see you raise some of these guys to adulthood and share some photos, at least.

I've had these in my yard before, too. Also on Abutilon. If you can get them to pupate, we'd all love to see the adults.
