Proproutia laredoata - Protoproutia

Proproutia laredoata - Protoproutia
29.797499, -100.998049, Val Verde County, Texas, USA

Moved tentatively - there are other similar genera
How did you rule out Protoproutia rusticaria? Moved from Butterflies and Moths.

Well,
P. rustica is a possibility, no doubt. My collecting locality is at the eastern edge of the MPG illustrated distribution of rustica and in the center of the range of laredoata, that is, if the available information and identifications are correct. There are very few images of anything in the genus to compare, but images of laredoata show a dark mid-dorsal stripe on the abdomen, as in the specimens I have photo'd at my site, while it is not obvious on rustica.

.
According to McDunnough (1939), P. rusticaria is "very similar to laredoata Cass. but with the basal two-thirds of both wings much paler and with, in consequence, better defined maculation." This one appears to be a little worn. I'm not comfortable making a call on this one. I am comfortable with leaving this in Protoproutia, however.

Hello Dave and Kyhl,

Please see my for my results when I sent two specimens to BOLD. Extremely confusing when you are dealing with lesser quality DNA. I am not sure the museum specimens are properly identified.
