Robber Fly - female

Robber Fly - Female
Lacey (near Olympia), Thurston County, Washington, USA
August 29, 2007
Seems like every time I hit the front yard with my camera, I find 2-3 new flies! They're so tough to ID, and there never seems to be a diptera expert around when you need one!!

Unfortunately, this one only stayed long enough to pose for 1 picture. :(

Well, this guy screams robber fly even to a newbie like me. Can anyone take 'im further along the old nomenclature highway?

Lucky curse
I wish I was "cursed" with robber flies. I seem to have a plague of ordinary house flies!

House flies
Micki, don't bet on it. We have few posted and they're hard to ID. Give it a try!

I KNOW!
And I'm terrible at it. I really respect the "fly guys" (and gals) because of that. But you're right... I should put more effort into photographing and ID'ing them. I need to get over the annoyance factor and just DO it.
