It looks like an Imperial Mot
It looks like an Imperial Moth, (Eacles imperialis). You're lucky to still have them there in NC. They seem to be just about gone from my area up north. Which is ridiculous, since their caterpillars eat just about every kind of tree: maples, oaks, pine, hickory... I don't know if it's light pollution or lawn chemicals or town programs to spray mosquitoes, but they are disappearing around here. Someone more knowledgable can probably tell you more about them. Great find!
