Running quickly along trunk of tiny (no more than 2 inch diameter) newly wind-thrown Red Spruce (
Picea rubens) tree in bright sunlight. Little Bigelow Mountain. Elevation about 2,500 feet and approximate GPS 45.1320, -70.2033. Specimen given to the Maine Forest Service Insect Collection in Augusta, Maine.
I am confused by the
Neoclytus muricatulus designation. According to Yanega's guide (Illinois Natural History Survey, Manual 6, 1996),
N. leucozonus is the correct name. Richard Hoffman makes a compelling argument for
leucozonus rather than
muricatulus here:
Hoffman1988. Unfortunately, this species was not included in Lingafelter's guide (Coleopterists Society Special Publication, No. 3, 2007), so I cannot say what his opinion is.
Addendum: A more recent source, The Cerambycidae of Canada and Alaska (Bousquet et al., 2017) designates
N. leucozonus as the correct name for this species.
