Casebearer pupa - Exema canadensis

Casebearer pupa - Exema canadensis
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
August 12, 2007
Size: about 3 mm
I was able to tear the case open without damaging the pupa. After the photo shoot I rolled a small-diameter tube of tissue around a small watercolor brush handle and inserted the pupa, placing the roll and pupa in a glass vial. I unrolled the tissue yesterday and saw the pupa alive and well, gyrating vigorously in its new "case." I rolled it up again and hope to see an adult one of these days.

A mystery solved !
I have seen this kind of small brown case walking on goldenrod so many times and asked myself each time what was in it. Thanks Jim to have solved this mystery.

I love solving mysteries :-)
It probably did originally come from goldenrod, Claude, as that was the most abundant of the species I was sweeping with my net.

If it matures,
I'll post it in this sequence of shots.
