To me, it closely resembled a female Amblyomma maculatum.

I submitted two photos in this series to TickEncounter Resource Center and they replied as follows: "Though we can't be absolutely certain without a microscope, this tick is most likely an adult female Amblyomma triste tick based on the geographic location, and tapered mouthparts. This tick has only recently been recognized in Arizona and western Texas, and is considered to be a vector of Rickettsia parkeri rickettsiosis in humans. You can read more about this emerging disease
