big bug - Mastigoproctus giganteus

big bug - Mastigoproctus giganteus
El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, USA
September 1, 2007
Size: big... maybe 4"?
This strange creature was walking down the street in front of my house. My husband noticed it when he went outside. It's rather large, my husband guessed 4". I tried to get a shot of it with a cig butt from the street for comparison.

Moved
Moved from Whipscorpions. Supposedly only this species exists in Texas.

Sure is small.
I guess cigarettes really do stunt your growth ;-)

Order Pedipalpia or Vinegarones (sometimes known as Vinegaroons).

Vinegaroon
I believe that is a vinegaroon. It looks like there aren't very many pictures of vinegaroons in the guide. Perhaps you would like to add yours.

A friend of mine told me a story about how he was camping in west Texas. After dark, he and his friends sat around a lantern spending some time talking before going to bed. The lantern attracted moths, and the moths attracted a vinegaroon. The vinegaroon would run out and grab a moth, chopping it into pieces and gobbling it up.

THANK YOU!!!
I don't know how to add photos to the guide. Last time my photo was moved to the guide by someone else. I took 9 total, I posted my favorite 3. :D
