Tiger Fly - Coenosia tigrina - female

Tiger Fly - Coenosia tigrina - Female
Lacey (near Olympia), Thurston County, Washington, USA
August 29, 2007
Seems like I have more flies in my front yard than anything else. Never knew there were so many different types! This fellow was kind enough to pose for a few shots, then went and got lunch and posed for a few more. I don't know how he was keeping/killing the little leaf hopper. Possibly spines on the front legs a la a mantis?

Anyway, I got a nice shot from all 3 angles plus a couple shots of him with his prey. As difficult as flies may be to ID, there should be enough here for some diptera nut to use I hope!!
