Robber Fly Holcocephala sp. - Holcocephala

Robber Fly Holcocephala sp. - Holcocephala
Evanston, Cook County, Illinois, USA
August 10, 2017
This species is common in our city garden. Three individuals of this species were sitting on 3 two foot tall flower stems simultaneously that day and one was there yesterday, 08/10/17. About 7 years ago we had one that sat on the same cactus flower stem for over a week, going out every few minutes to catch insects. It always followed nearly the same route in its hunt and so I was able to take a photo of it from above as it flew by by stationing myself along its route. It cruised rather slowly until it spotted an insect of interest.
