Woodpile Nesting German Yellowjackets. - Vespula germanica

Woodpile Nesting German Yellowjackets. - Vespula germanica
West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania, USA
August 10, 2017
Size: Roughly 9" x 5" comb set.
This German yellowjacket nest was built in a pile of firewood. This would be the first non-structural germanica nest I have personally collected, although I have seen four other non-structural german yellowjacket nests in my area.

Non-structural?
What do you mean by "non-structural"? I have never heard this term being applied to a wasp nest. Do you mean it lacked an envelope?

Reply.
I mean "non-structural" as not a nest constructed in a man made structure like most Vespula germanica do in North America. This nest was unique in that the queen selected a site that was not in a building.

Thanks
Thanks for the clarification!
