Bird Hover Fly - Eupeodes volucris
Desert Botanical Garden, Maricopa County, Arizona, USA
March 9, 2005
Size: Circa 12 mm
These syrphids were quite common about blooming Asteraceae at the Desert Botanical Garden and in other locations near Phoenix in early March. The shape of the abdomen sure is odd. I was unable to determine if this might be a sex difference--all the flies I saw had this odd shape.
Thanks to comments below from Gerard Pennards--this is Eupeodes volucris, abdomen indicates it is a male.
