Globular Springtail - Bourletiella juanitae - female

Globular Springtail - Bourletiella juanitae - Female
Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
August 30, 2007
Found in the grass near the house.

Thanks Frans
I just unlinked the 2 pictures. Is the other one another female or the male?

Both
are female. I did not see a picture of the male yet.

OK
Now I'll have to go back out and try to find a male.

In that case : for your info
the male does not have the bilateral 3 white spots. It does have the white longitudinal middorsal stripe in the anterior part of the body AND it has the two small dots on the 5th abdominal segment, typical for B. juanitae.

I got a male
And I tried photographing it on a blue background to see if it came out any better than the light color I've been using.

Bourletiella juanitae, female
Originally such specimens were described as a separate species Bourletiella fallonae. But they turned out to be female specimens of Bourletiella juanitae. In other words: Bourletiella juanitae has sexual dimorphism. The sexes are coloured differently.
