Confusing moth (Dicymolomia?) with reflectors! - Petrophila confusalis

Confusing moth (Dicymolomia?) with reflectors! - Petrophila confusalis
Sunnyvale, Santa Cruz County, California, USA
August 14, 2017
Size: 10mm-ish
Why confusing? It seems like every time I see it, I see Dicymolomia metalliferalis at the same time! Both moths are similar in size shape and color. Both have reflectors on the base of the wings along with a sort of checkered pattern. What happens is I usually photograph them both, but Dicymolomia metalliferalis always looks better because a)The reflectors are much brighter, and b)the pinstripes on the underwing of Dicymolomia metalliferalis I'm guessing, provide a perfect fine, high contrast area to focus on, hence the photos are sharper focus.

Compare the above with the very different:

As a result I always post the Dicymolomia metalliferalis photo but think it is something else.

But wait, there's more. Soon I will post a third completely different reflector fringe moth species. I never knew this was such a common ornament for moths!

This is really starting to bug me. Again last night, both moths are present. None of the Dicymolomia X photos are very sharp. But I gots to know!

Thanks for the ID, Bob! What an interesting...
...species! Female adults staying underwater for hours, according to the guide page! I'm surprised to see mine is just the third submission for California! Not the attention it deserves!
