One or more?
Charley -- Thanks for the diagnosis. Does this seem to you to be the work of one larva or more? If one, it must have had a voracious appetite :)

Just one
Larvae of this genus feed only on sap (no tissue), so they have to cover more ground than other leafminers to get enough food.

Sap-eater's mines
... And since they consume only the sap, the mines don't have dark frass that a tissue-eating leafminer would excrete, correct?

Frass
There is sometimes a thin, liquidy brown frass trail, but no solid pellets.

Thanks
Thanx for the great feedback, Charley. BTW, I'm enjoying your Tracks and Signs book. Bought it about a month ago, and have already started looking at the outdoors from new perspectives.
