larva - Psephenus herricki

larva - Psephenus herricki
Donalds, Abbeville County, South Carolina, USA
September 1, 2007
while walking through the woods I found this fellow crawling on my arm and gently placed it on the leaf. beetle larva?

Psephenus herricki
This genus only has one species that occurs in the Eastern US.

Boy, it sure
looks like a water penny.
Nice shot! How big was it?

maybe 5mm
very small, about 5mm long. yes! i was walking by a creek and had been crouching and investigating amongst some small rocks in the creek. thanks! (I hope it survived, 10 yards or so from the creek where I left it.)

Ready to pupate?
I can't recall, but I think these beetles pupate in the soil, which would explain why this larva was out of the water.
