Toxophora from east side of Sierra Nevada - Toxophora virgata

Toxophora from east side of Sierra Nevada - Toxophora virgata
Just below 3000', base of Nine-Mile Canyon, northwest of Pearsonville, Inyo County, California, USA
June 20, 2017
Size: Small: BL < 10mm
Perched on leaflet of the shrub Psorothamnus arborescens var. minutifolius on a sandy bank just above the narrow, mucky, feebly running creek near the mouth of Nine-Mile Canyon. The temperature was around 111° F, and many small insects were perched on the stems and within the sparse shade of this shrub...trying to remain cool and avoiding the higher temperatures on the ground.

This goes to Toxophora virgata in this 1891 key by Coquillett from the 3 submarginal cells; cross-vein at apex of discal cell shallowly S-shaped (not angular) and lacking a stump vein (cf. wing venation diagram); and dorsum of abdomen with a black stripe on each side of the ochre-colored median longitudinal stripe.

It's also in excellent agreement with Osten Saken's 1877 original description. Note the white tuft of pile at the base of the antennae; black legs with silvery-white tomentose femora; and white tomentose venter.
