this species often does pick some weird places to nest!

 
Cavity nester.
As far as I know, this species is a habitual cavity nester, leading to unpleasant encounters when folks check their bird boxes, turn over that unused flowerpot, etc. They are in fact competing with some native birds for nesting sites, including purple martins. Be careful where you stick your hands, people:-)

 
One-time use?
Does anyone know whether P. dominulus uses the same nest next year?
