Thanks for correcting!
I erred on this based mostly on size. BugGuide sizes for geometer moths are typically listed as total wingspan. The I. defectaria size is listed as forewing only, and I misread this as total wingspan. Silly me thought that at 35mm wingspan this had to be I. vellivolata because in my mind I. defectaria only had a 20mm total wingspan. This shows I have to pay closer attention to how size is represented on BugGuide and be more patient when I submit something for an ID request.
