Size: very large-
I see that Leaf Cutting ants are close..... the black ands have a similar shape but this shot is brown.

Lasius sp.
Not even close to a leafcutter in size (about 1/3), which in any case occurs no closer to Maryland than southwestern Louisiana. This is one of the cornfield ants, but resolution is insufficient to decide between L. alienus and L. neoniger, the two common eastern brown species.
