Ant - Lasius americanus

Ant - Lasius americanus
Carroll County, Maryland, USA
August 15, 2017
Size: very large-
I see that Leaf Cutting ants are close..... the black ands have a similar shape but this shot is brown.

Moved
Moved from Ants.

Lasius sp.
Not even close to a leafcutter in size (about 1/3), which in any case occurs no closer to Maryland than southwestern Louisiana. This is one of the cornfield ants, but resolution is insufficient to decide between L. alienus and L. neoniger, the two common eastern brown species.
Note size of this actual leafcutter against the person's fingers:

Moved for expert attention
Moved from ID Request.

Dr. Trager or one of the other experts will take the ID further.
