Delphacidae, dorsalX - Liburniella ornata

Delphacidae, dorsalX - Liburniella ornata
Plymouth Rock, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
August 24, 2017
Size: 2- mm
August 24, 2017: swept a 20 year prairie planting that is 80% mowed (inter-seeded more prairie grasses this spring). Of course the color and pattern of this nymph caught my attention. Luckily there is BugGuide with great photos and information such that I could identify it. Put it in a vial and gave it pieces of stems/leaf blades of Big Bluestem, Indian Grass and Foxtail, maybe an occasional Prairie Cord Grass. Always a mix with new pieces added 2X a day.

August 29, 2017: Oh No! Lying on the bottom of the vial (but on a short bit of stem) was an upside down nymph, legs in the air, un-moving and dead.
But emptying the contents of the vial, it's a shed! And there is an adult!
Photographed and set free.
