Pipevine swallowtail chrysalis
Do you know why the colors of the chrysalises vary? Does this relate to gender, or to the age of the cacoons?

Chrysalis Colors
They are a different color when they first change but when they harden, their colors set to a few different colors. It is thought they are preprogrammed to turn the colors of leaves and branches that would be the color of the stems and dying leaves as well as the mature leaves of their host plants so that they would blend with the colors of that plant. They will usually start their change on a color that will coincide with the color they change to. The colors do not signify age or gender. Although you will see the color of the butterfly through all chrysalis when they are getting ready to eclose (emerge).
