Clemensia patella of authors
Pretty sure this is out of range for Clemensia albata. See Lafontaine & Schmidt (2010), p. 114
(
1
)
. I'm waiting to hear back on the range for albata.

Clemensia albata
Steve - Please update this page with your findings on C. albata range. There are of course many BG and MPG records for north FL and further south. Whatever this moth turns out to be, it is certainly not uncommon in our area.

patella of authors added
I added a page for
Clemensia patella
of authors, not (Druce, 1885)
here
. The taxonomy of that species, true
patella
, and
albata
were confused prior to Lafontaine & Schmidt (2010).
C. patella
of authors had erroneously been applied to the western taxon but should have been applied to the FL taxon. The correction in Lafontaine & Schmidt (2010) had been overlooked by MPG and elsewhere. I will fix that and update the pages for
albata
at both MPG and BugGuide once I get the ranges sorted out. I believe that
albata
is widespread, CA, OR, WA, all of southern Canada and most of eastern US south to NC.
Patella
of authors is confined to NC to FL. BOLD shows three BIN groups two of which are widespread and narrowly separated and may refer to
albata
and the third being confined to NC and FL.

patella of authors added
Clearly, the distribution and the taxonomy of these species is very unsettled. It is very interesting and informative to learn some of the taxonomic history that has led to our current confusion. I have no doubt that it will be worked out correctly, and I am grateful to you and others for accepting that challenge. I look forward to further developments. Thanks, BC

OK. It looks like I probably have this right but it turns out that authors are in the process of revising the group. So we'll hold of for now.
