Carpenter ants

Carpenter ants "Camponotus"? - Camponotus
Kenwood, Sonoma County California County, California, USA
September 6, 2004
Size: 10mm +/-
This group of ants came out of their hole when the hole was shaded from the sun at about 11:00AM. They look like they were on the breeding flight. If there hole was exposed to the sun they would go back inside. They were located on a dirt trail in the foothills north of Kenwood at the Bouverie Preserve.

Yes.
Definitely carpenter ants. Might be C. modoc or C. castaneus, but I can't recall the distributions for those species.

Thank You Eric. Several people on the hike believed that carpenter ants were much larger than these.
