Named in honor of expert conchologist (shells) and avid microlepidoptera collector Abdiel William
Hanham (1857–1944) of Duncan, Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

This species can usually be recognized by its small size, brown color, dark median band and lines across the distal wing, and the dark lower reniform with adjacent white spots.

Records from British Columbia south through California to Arizona.
