Strange bumble bee - Bombus rufocinctus - male

Strange bumble bee - Bombus rufocinctus - Male
Yellowstone NP, Lone Star Geyser, Wyoming, USA
August 18, 2017
Wing venation points clearly to Apini and probably Bombus. However, in the field I didn't recognize it as such because of its behavior. Here it's perching on the dead flower stalk, wing position unusual for Bombus - but consistent for several specimens. Is it a male on the look-out for mating opportunities? Is this the normal behavior in this species? And of course, can the species be determined?
