Female Sympetrum danae?? - Sympetrum - Female
Swede's Forest Scientific and Natural Area, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, USA
September 9, 2017
I have a feeling that this individual may be identifiable, but I am having difficulty. This is my only photo.
There were black meadowhawks and autumn meadowhawks present. Also present we meadowhawks in the ruby/white-faced/Cherry-faced group. I think this is meadowhawk. I think that amber in the wings will eliminate autumn and white-faced. For that reason and other reasons I suspect the possibilities are ruby, cherry-faced, and black meadowhawks.

I am not in black meadowhawk range often and something about this individual (I think the base color) just looks unfamiliar to me. Can a black meadowhawk have an abdomen that is this light and unpatterned above?

Photographed on rock in bur-reed marsh.

Sympetrum sp.
Unfortunately, with only a dorsal view, it is impossible to know his exact identity.

Yes, some Black Meadowhawk females have this type of coloration but when we looking at the side of the thorax, we can see the presence of yellow bands. Amber at the base of the wing can be present on white-faced female.

We can eliminate autumn Meadowhawk because of the black legs (there are yellows for autumn). Ruby/cherry-faced/white-faced females can be identified only with the genitals examination. I think she is part of this group.

Thank you
Especially for giving the reasons for your beliefs. I appreciate it.
